The For Basic Functions of Management Before we can lead the people and the organization to a better place, we must first understand the basic functions of management. The four functions of management are a theory defined by Henry Fayor (1841-1925) and they include the four functions that any manager should perform to keep the people and the organization on the right track. These managerial functions are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. The first function of management is planning. The process in which you develop the organizational goals and determine how they will be achieved. Creating and implementing a vision, establishing a mission statement, and setting and monitoring goals and objectives are all important components of the planning process. For example, a manager of a retail store will need to have a merchandising plan, a marketing plan, and an employee plan.  The second function of management is organizing. A manager is responsible for organizing the people an...

Reach up and Touch the Beauty of Life Possibly nothing in the profession of management gives a young leader greater concern as they anticipate their future work than that of successfully leading a group of people. To do this requires, judgment, skill, training, together with as complete a knowledge of the art of management as they are able to acquire. Management practices are far more effective when the leader is sure of the ground on which they stand. There is a great difference between discovering a sound managerial practice through accident or following it because others have been known to follow it successfully.  After carefully considering every possible discussion and suggestion offered, I can think of none that I would not have welcomed as a young manager had such been offered to me. Most of the knowledge and leadership wisdom in this blog was gained at the expense of my employees, and, at the same time, at a great cost to me. It is my goal to save other managers from the mi...

Who Is This Blog Dedicated To? This blog is dedicated to those who are committed to achieve a higher level of leadership success, whose burning passion is to be and to do something more than the average leader; to those who believe that every person is responsible for their own leadership success; to those who believe in the evaluation and development of self; to those that hunger for wisdom; to those that believe  knowledge is the key to the door of opportunity; those that believe leadership success is not just a perfunctory following of policies and believes. As the leader is, so is the team. The greatest work that can engage thought and invite activity is leadership. Upon the shoulders of leadership, in its broadest sense, depends on the future welfare of the employee, the company, the nation, and the world. If we are to reach our highest state of personal happiness and usefulness, as well as to contribute our greatest possible service to the organizations and people that we lea...

The Power of Attitude           Many say that leadership is better than management. But in reality, management is an important component of leadership. It is just a part of a greater whole. There is a leader in all of us. We just have to reach deep within and bring it out. The leader in us can shape other people's lives. It can mold the future. And if you use it properly, it can give you the power to change the world. Leadership is one of the most studied and least understood topics in the world. There are millions of books, courses, and websites to help create and promote our obsession with the subject of leadership.  I have heard it defined in many ways. But if you study each description closely, the same key words appear. Leadership involves a goal, a process, people and an action or accomplishment. If you put these together, leadership simply means, it is a process by which people are put together to accomplish a common goal. And the person who is ...
