Good leadership is learning to be thankful for each day. Be patient with what seems the delay in the progress of goals. Do not be discouraged in doing good. It may often seem as if you accomplished very little; as if, with all your efforts, you cannot effectually help those whom you wish to help. When you lift them up, they fall again. You may even sometimes find that your very help seems to do them harm. As leaders, we may sometimes do harm. But the greatest mistake of any leader is to stand distant from the needs of the people they lead.
If your idea of patience is never getting annoyed, staying calm in any situation, and being endlessly agreeable, no wonder it seems impossible. That is not a realistic definition of patience. At its most simple level, patience is the ability to wait. The ability to wait for something you need or want.
Four Tips to Help You Improve Your Degree of Patience
1. Accept What You Can’t Change
A lot of times, feeling impatient happens because we want something to change immediately. Evaluate the facts and determine which of these factors you can control. Then, you can focus on the things you have control over and let go of the things that you don't.
2. Slow Down
All leaders live fast lives - deadlines, goals, objectives, and strategies. When we take the time to slow down, we become more mindful and patient.
3. Don’t Take Life Too Seriously
Learning to take your leadership position and life less seriously can be difficult. Take time to be happy and childlike throughout the day. Look for humor in the difficult situations. Take the time to breath deep several times a day.
4. Practice Empathy
Practicing empathy can improve your patience level and communication skills. Psychologists define empathy as the ability to understand and feel what others are feeling.
We may look at the dark side or the bright side of things, as we choose. We may look up or down, we may look in or out. By looking at the dark side, we lose the power of patience. We see only what is selfish, cold, and bad in people, only what is dark and negative in the world. Be patient. Look upward, upward, upward! Seek, and you will find the ability to be a more positive and patient leader. You already have what you are looking for.
Life is beautiful. We are guided by the glory and beauty of the sun, the moon, and the stars. The journey is paved with mountains of leadership opportunity. When you wake up in the morning, reach up and touch the beauty of life! Take the people to the top of the mountain. That is the job of leadership!
